The negative vote: Comments

I would agree with this except it doesn't address what I percieve as a real fly in the ointment: the 'vote down whore'. (forgive the imagery, lol). Let's face it, some people (and yes I COULD name names, in fact I called one in particular out on it AS A SUBMITTAL)... some people (definitely a minority) will take perverse pleasure in just being mean-spirited and onnery will vote down nearly every thing they read (you can just look at their vote pattern of up/down to see that's their 'style'. These are spam voters. Even though I can (and did) kick the offender from my source list his negativity is still poisoning others. If he had actually read the article, perhaps commented on it, I wouldn't be near as harsh as I am about it. But when it's just plain obvious that this person is doing this as a childish 'spite' type thing (and perhaps singling me and few others out to hate on) ... then I feel that the vote mechanism is broken. I would offer as a suggestion that you put some kind of regulation on allowance of voting (1 per minute, perhaps 5 minutes) would greatly curtail this sort of immature activity. Think about it.

by the way, a vote-up-whore is just as bad, if not worse.

I found myself thinking this same thing and wondering, "Am I doing this wrong?" I think the up/down voting definitely carries the wrong connotation--especially for Digg converts, etc. More emphasis should be placed on it being a personal rating (and thus a rating for your fans). Maybe some way to segregate the up/down votes when looking at my front page and all sources, or something similar--a dual vote if you will.

The only problem is rudeness and lack of appreciation.

If something does NOT interest you - DO NOT READ IT - each submission has a Title, Description and Category.

A Negative vote should only be for deception, negligence of spam.

The bottom line is respect for the efforts that users are putting in to this - there are a few memebers that seem to make a game out of giving nothing but massive amounts of thumbs downs.

Use common sense, don't read something that you are not interested in - but do not bring bad karma to the submitter.

If something does not interest someone, it would not be thumbs down- it would be a neutral.

SE, I know what you're saying. Nothing is written on stone, so we'll see how things evolve. Like I said before, the site will set some guidelines but it's the people who use it the ones that will shape it one way or another.

However, just for the record, right now when a story gets "negative" votes, the karma of the submitter is not affected in any way
